The Defender Mite Winter Classic takes over Palmer Imaging Arena January 23–24, 2027, bringing Tier II 8U A, B, and C teams together for two days dedicated to the next generation of hockey.
Built exclusively for Mite players, the Winter Classic gives young athletes the chance to compete, develop, and experience all the excitement of a Defender tournament weekend. With a three-game minimum, competitive matchups, and championships on the line, this is their opportunity to take center stage.
Because at 8U, hockey is about more than wins and losses.
It’s the excitement before the puck drops. The first big goal. The stick taps after a great save. Celebrating with teammates. And the moments players will still be talking about on the ride home.
This is where a love for tournament hockey begins.
And Pittsburgh provides the perfect backdrop. Between games, teams and families can explore the Steel City’s sports culture, riverfronts, museums, attractions, restaurants, and family-friendly destinations.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The Mite Winter Classic features round-robin play followed by playoffs, with each team guaranteed a minimum of three games.
Teams may play one or more round-robin games on Day 1 and Day 2, followed by consolation, semifinal, and/or championship games on the final day. Semifinal rounds and consolation games are not guaranteed.
Divisions are initially organized according to USA Hockey roster and age-group classifications. Defender tournament operations may adjust placements on a case-by-case basis to create the most competitive matchups possible.

The Mite Winter Classic is designed specifically around the 8U hockey experience—giving young players an exciting tournament environment where they can compete, develop, and create memories alongside their teammates.
For some players, it may be another tournament weekend.
For others, it could be the weekend that makes them fall in love with the game.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Schedule Release: Tournament schedules are expected to be released approximately 7–10 days before puck drop.
Teams should plan to arrive in the Pittsburgh area by the day before the tournament begins and must be prepared for games beginning as early as 7:00 AM on the first day.
Departure should be planned for after the final tournament day. Final games are expected to conclude by approximately 5:00 PM local time.
Travel Planning Notice: Tournament schedules may require adjustments leading up to the event. Teams and families are strongly encouraged to make refundable or flexible travel arrangements and avoid making non-refundable plans based solely on the initial tournament schedule.
